Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

Karin, The lost text was mainly about a flock of crows I'd watched Saturday evening. The harpies seemed a lot like that. Around here "second childhood" is meant to be kind of comically demeaning, is associated with older people doing foolish things. I more or less resolved early on to try ...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

Hi Karin, I just learned that "ctrl+w" instantly closes my browser. Had been finishing a reply and meant to push "ctrl+z" to undo a mistake. Went incredibly off the mark, some reason. Now I need to get off the machine so I'll have to write even worse. No, I missed Ronia altogethe...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

Karin, Those were beautiful pictures! I'm stunned too that cell phones are delivering that kind of high quality. But thanks, was a very nice little trip. I liked the one too, you linked to the other day--one of a Viking boat with the bow scrolling back over it. So sorry about your friend's death. It...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

For a nickel I'd risk being hunted down and flogged by Random House for doing it, but I don't know how to set up a PayPal account. Anyhow, typing in pages 204-217 of The Discoverers ("The Wandering Vikings") is probably worth more than that and I shouldn't settle so cheap. Going quickly th...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

I didn't realize there were so many ties in the list of 100 countries shown on WHO's page—reprinted at Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate (I thought there were only 95.) Sweden does make the top third, ranked 32nd. But again, as it says in the article: “Ev...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

the Norwegian doctor (and ACE-study) is pointing to connections between somatic ill-health to early experiences... (are we interested in hearing about them??) Yes? I believe strongly in corporal punishment bans! I admire and cheer those that aim for children's legal rights, but can't shed the suspi...

Re: The Swedish Corporal Punishment Ban and the Vikings.

Hi Karin, To the Vikings: as much as anything I was just playing to have brought them up. It does seem funny since Scandinavians today I think are thought of as mostly fun-loving bobsledders... I think your reference to large families is what made me think of the Vikings. They sure had no monopoly o...

Re: Reflections on therapy

D.R.B. You're right I think about feminism having taking a misstep or two along the way. Assertive feminine voices however I think are and will continue being indispensable when it comes to securing respect for kids. I don't think kids' rights could be happening without womens' rights happening firs...

Re: Reflections on therapy

My Swedish begins and ends with the word "fartlek". Wikipedia says it means "speed play" but my very successful track coach told me (a very long time ago) it was developed by somebody Swedish who had spent time watching children playing--unsupervised--just doing what they natural...

Re: Reflections on therapy

D.R.B., I'm no expert on Dawkins, but his concept of a "meme" to me seems to fit hand-in-glove with this issue. My (limited) understanding is that he means by this a kind of "mental gene"--the biological counterparts, he points out, carry the command "Copy me!" The men...

Re: Reflections on therapy

Karin, The Vikings had problems with overpopulation/too many children. This group may be interested--the little I know about 'psychohistory' makes me think that anyone even vaguely connected to that circle should or already does know about this: http://www.amazon.com/Discoverers-Daniel-J-Boorstin/dp...

Re: Reflections on therapy

Dennis and Karin, By the way, you did discover that Miller is not a perfect human being. The truth's the truth and I don't suppose anything bad can ever come from it, I think it's fine and maybe even important that those experiences be noted. (Not pleasant for you though, I'm very glad you hung in a...

Re: Reflections on therapy

D.R.B., First, I think it's fine, too, that Miller writes for anyone. I think her whole basis starts with the fact that there's no 'rocket science' involved. I'm not sure I understand your question about the allusions I made. The sun orbiting the earth was Ptolemy, and humours ("black bile, yel...

Re: Reflections on therapy

Karin, Miller writes somewhere that she wanted to find the source of evil. If she didn't succeed--didn't hit the nail directly on the head and harder than anyone has before--I'll eat my hat. I understand that denial is essential to evil's survival, but the apparent lack of professional interest out ...
