Interesting posts here. In my opinion Primal seems to focus too much on birth traumas. When some people read Janov's books they concluded that most of their problems were due to their birth trauma. By doing so, they could avoid the enormous pain suffered in the childhood. Birth regression, re-birthi...

In my opinion there are no real big differences between RST and Primal but in its approach. First of all the name Primal seemed to have attracted certain mystical elements. The name Re-directing is more to the point. Van Winkle also made it clear that re-living a trauma shouldn't be the goal but EXP...

Thanks John for telling us about your RST experiences. Maybe the 3 month intensive applies to people who have the time to work on themselves every day without worrying about a job or income. And the length and intensity of past abuse probably has an effect. I agree that codependency is very underrat...

Primal Therapy - like most other forms of therapy - is quite susceptible to abuse. The true motives of a therapist are always something to be considered. If the therapist doesn't trust anyone, then what to expect from the client? Clare, could you tell us a bit more about your part of a peer supervis...

I've to admit that only when I'm in the right mood, I engage in a debate about spanking. I feel, as 8 million other people do in Sweden, spanking a child is harmful and so self-evident, that debating about that is unheard of. And why debate about something when the other group can't be there to defe...

Spanking

Being involved in a spanking debate in another forum, I'm curious how others here deal with that. Apparently many people in the US are convinced that spanking is just an approved form of disciplining children and shouldn't be compared with child abuse in any way. If denial goes that far, what about ...

Here's another translated excerpt from the same book, dealing with the aspects of proper primal therapy and the dangers of improper ones: Professionalism also means discovering the own traps in the therapeutic relationship. The therapist is allowed to make mistakes – conducting therapy is only human...

I've finished it and this book is indeed very well written. It describes the various aspects of the abused and misused child, and is aware of the poisenous pedagogy. The writers stay for 100 percent on the side of the misused child and at the same time avoid the traps that many other therapists seem...

I agree that there are many mock therapists out there, who are not worthy of your money. What's been written about Stettbacher is not that much but after Alice Miller publicly detached herself from his methods, his popularity decreased. Sam Turton wrote an interesting article on Alice Miller that yo...

I'm reading the book myself now and it's one of the best books I've read in a long time. I plan to quote some more from the book next week and possibly translate the introduction into English.

Real Self versus Unreal Self

I'm reading a very interesting Dutch book at the moment, called The Myth of a Happy Childhood (2006) by Gaby Stroecken and Rien Verdult. It's based on Janov and Alice Miller, among others. It's rare when there's some professional that stands 100 percent on the side of the child so I'll come back wit...

Those hunters traveled where the food was. That was eventually a cause to start fighting with others who had better sources of food. When living on a permanent place and living off the land, what will you do when your harvest goes to misery? Hermit, have you considered other primal therapies besides...

Hermit wrote: Why to invent and pay for extremely expensive primal therapies when you can prevent the suffering by returning to nature. It's obvious that I don't live the way I would like to. One of the reasons why I don't is because I plan to apply at Janov's primal center, what means I need money ...

Hermit, I do agree with a lot of what you wrote but I don't believe in escapism as a way to restore the natural balance on this planet. I think it's too late for that. Don't underestimate the technology and the methods the establishment is using to protect and continue its power. I still believe the...

In my opinion kids shouldn't have to worry about parenting. They should be kids and enjoy those things kids do. Shifting the responsibilities from the parents to the kids is not a good method. Most parents want kids and they want good relationships with their kids. An obligatory course would do a lo...
